Garry takes to the pool 20 years after last swimming a stroke

Garry will be watching the Olympians hit the pool this summer after rekindling his love for swimming 20 years after he last took the plunge.

The 38-year-old, who has a mental health condition, lives in a SIS supported living scheme in Chester and has been on a fitness drive.

Support worker Hannah Morris suggested adding swimming to his get fit regime, but he was a little nervous at the prospect of getting in the pool.

Hannan said:

Garry has been making a big effort with his exercise, so I suggested swimming as it is a really great way of getting fit. He was apprehensive that he wouldn’t be able to do it after such a long time.

But it really wasn’t a problem. He managed to clock up 20 lengths in the first swim and he has been beating that total every time he goes. It has made a real difference for Garry, building his confidence and giving him focus.

Garry, who has lived at the scheme for two years, has now been clocking up more than 500 metres on every swim.

He said:

I really was nervous at swimming again, but it is a skill you never forget. I’m trying to get in as many sessions as I can – and I’ll be definitely watching the swimmers in the Olympics this summer to see how I can improve my style.
