Residents at a Kirklees care home celebrated the start of the Paralympic Games by competing for gold medals in a series of sporting events.
Kenmore Care Home in Cleckheaton organised its own version of the Games to coincide with the opening ceremony in Tokyo.
The home, which is part of Valorum Care Group, provides care and support to people with physical and long-term neurological conditions such as Parkinson’s disease, Huntington’s disease, multiple sclerosis and motor neurone disease.
Kenmore’s Paralympics gave residents the chance to enjoy a range of sports including boxing, basketball, curling, shot put, bean bag hoopla and the 100m sprint.
Gold medals were presented to the winners of each event – with staff and residents singing rousing renditions of national anthems on the winners’ podium.
Kenmore activities co-ordinator Gareth who organised the event said:
Everyone at Kenmore has really enjoyed the summer of sport but the Paralympics are really something we take to our hearts. It was a fun and at times emotional day which was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone who took part.
We try to make life at Kenmore as enjoyable as possible and an event like this is part of the full package of support we provide. It’s not just about looking after people and taking care of their essential needs – it’s also about putting on activities which make life enjoyable and rewarding.
Over the next couple of weeks, we’ll be watching as much of the Paralympic Games as possible in Tokyo and taking inspiration from the brilliant athletes competing in the Games.
