Karl is a man on a mission – he wants to regain independence to do the things in life we all take for granted.
He lives in a Valorum Care Group Scheme in Clacton-on-Sea, Essex, and has taken the first steps to living a more independent life.
He previously lived in Valorum Care Group’s residential care scheme in the town, but has now moved into supported living apartments and is learning to do things for himself.
Karl, who has a mental health diagnosis, is developing a passion for the kitchen and is now cooking his own meals after learning to shop for all the ingredients.
The 56-year-old has also been using his new-found independence to learn other skills. He couldn’t resist lending a hand to the contractors who are refurbishing his scheme.
Scheme Manager Tracey Barnard explained:
Karl has been helping the decorators to paint. He wanted to join in and they were more than happy to have his help.
Karl is now doing things that he hasn’t been able to do on his own for years. By moving into supported living, he has gained much more independence in his life. We have been there to support him as he learns to cook and shop, but we are now seeing him doing more and more by himself.
