How it happened
Jade had been married for eight months when her husband began to mentally, physically and sexually abuse her.
Alienated from family and friends, she believed it was her fault. The day she decided to go to the police Jade was terrified they wouldn’t believe her and feared her three children would be taken into social care services.
They were so kind; the police picked my children up from school and took me to a refuge. I was so confused I didn’t know where I was, but the staff were very kind and patient. At first, I thought I had failed my children ending up in a refuge. Now I understand that I would never have survived on my own, without the other women and the support of the staff, I would have gone back to him. I am rebuilding my life and soon I move into a new home. But when I found the courage to leave, it wasn’t just a house I needed, it was a safe place to heal, I needed a refuge.
