Kirk’s Story

The story

How it happened

Kirk is a determined man with his sights set firmly on living a more independent life in the future.

He moved into Ashdown supported living scheme in Teignmouth, Devon, last year and has been taking positive steps forward away from his old life.

Kirk was previously a heavy drinker and had fallen in with the wrong crowd, which resulted in him being sectioned and spending a year in a secure unit.

He explained:

My life has changed a lot and certainly for the good. I sometimes go to town or to the post office on my own. I think I’ve had a couple of breakdowns since I’ve been here where I’ve not been able to cope with what’s going on in my mind. But I’ve learnt how to take a step back, and think before I act. The staff make time for me and they listen. It’s made me feel better, better in my mind. I get on well with everyone here, as we’re like one big family.

Kirk has been learning basic life skills, such as cooking for himself or catching a bus, and now even wants to find a job.

He said:

Eventually I hope to live on my own, but still supported by the staff here. I’d also like to do some work experience with the National Trust, as I like gardening. Maybe in six months’ time I could be out there helping the National Trust, maybe cutting down trees or mowing lawns. This journey hasn’t been easy, but I’m proud of myself. I’ve come a long way. I think this is the happiest I’ve been in my life if I’m honest.

Emma Richards, registered manager at Ashdown, said:

I saw something in Kirk and I thought I want to give this guy a chance. It was a slow transition, and we put together a robust care package. To start with, Kirk did a few overnight stays before moving in properly. Now he’s learnt techniques to manage negative behaviour and, since he’s been here, he’s not had one incident and is living his best life. He’s grasped every opportunity and is able to go out independently often now too.
